University of Florence

The University of Florence (UNIFI) has roots going back to the Studium Florentinum (Florentine Republic, 1321) and acquired its current name in 1923. It has 21 Departments (9 of them ranked as excellent) in 5 areas: Biomedical, Scientific, Technological, Social Sciences, Humanities & Education. It has over 55.000 students, 7% of them foreign; 1.700 Professors and Researchers, 800 Research fellows, 1.500 technical/administrative staff. UNIFI offers over 260 different Degree courses for first and second level; 28 of these offer Double & Joint degrees, 10 programmes are entirely held in English, several Master and several individual courses are held in English; there are 24 PhDs Programs (mostly in English). It has over 470 international cooperation agreements with foreign universities in 95 different countries.

UNIFI has over 900 Erasmus+ agreements and is one of the most active Italian Universities with over 1.200 Erasmus outgoing students and 1.000 incoming students every year. The university hosts the Confucius Centre and two UNESCO chairs, both are linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. It also hosts also a world leading university museum network (ten million specimens), including the Museum of Natural History – one of the most important in Italy- known for the “Specola” and its extraordinary collection of anatomical waxworks. Scientific research is one of the strengths of UNIFI. The University of Florence is partner in the European University of Well-Being – EUniWell. Seven universities and 102 associate partners from the seven European countries where the Universities are located aim at empowering research, education and training to enhance well-being at societal and individual level (www.euniwell.eu).
