South China Botanical Garden (SCBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is one of the oldest botany research institutions in China.

SCBG, formerly known as the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry of the Sun Yat-Sen University, was founded in 1929 by renowned botanist academician Chun Woon-Young, and was renamed in 1954 as South China Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

It consists of three divisions:

  1. a nursery and exhibition zone, occupying an area of 282 ha, is designed mainly for plant ex-situ conservation with 17,543 conservation taxa in archive, including 38 special collection gardens such as magnolia garden, ginger garden, cycad garden and etc. It is also built with a large modern exhibition greenhouse and a science popularization center.
  2. a research and residential zone, covering an area of 37 ha., contains 4 research centers, including the Plant Science Center, Ecology & Environmental Sciences Center, the Agriculture & Resource Plant Center and the Molecular Analysis and Genetic Improvement Center. The research centre counts also important support facilities such as a herbarium with more than 1,100,000 plant specimens’ collection, a library, the editorial office of Journal of Tropical and Subtropical Botany, a computer network center and a public laboratory.
  3. the Dinghushan National Nature Reserve, established in 1956, is the first national nature reserve in China and the only reserve affiliated to CAS: over 2,291 plant species are in situ conserved in an area of 1,155 ha.
